The story played out about the way I expected it to. Although the villain was a bit of a twist, it wasn't entirely unexpected. Overall, it left me with more questions than answers, and I suspect the new version will probably fix some of that.

Well, it is the intro book, so it's going to be presenting more "series" questions than answers.

But we'll see what you think once you get through v2. I can tell you that Ciel gets more fleshing out, though you still don't find out exactly what she's after till book 2. And as far as Aiden's brother and what exactly happened with his family, that's a book 2 answer a well.

It is an age of extremes.

Massive population boom. Over 200% growth in less than a century. The rich were richer, the middle class was growing, but the poor were in even worse conditions than before.

Prostitution grows as a result, both in women and in children. Although medical technology grows, deseases spread due to the large number of prostitution. It becomes legal for police men to inspect women if they seem even the slight ill, regardless of status. Rape becomes a common occurrance.

As a result men die left and right from illness and there are more rich women than there are men for them. Polygamy becomes a possible option for various conferances and is almost made legal.

Utilitarianism becomes an accepted concept, to the extreme, workers in factories are called "hands" and are inferior to a tool. Children are included and children as young as 4 years old become workers, in factories, maids, etc...

These "hands" are dispensable. The concept of use a child because there 10 others where that comes from becomes common even inside the family house of middle and upper class.

As a result the idea od comunism is born as a response to the extreme conditions workers had to work in.

Well, it should at least give some sympathy to character backstory. Berserker's Master is a bit of a jerk, but I think his reasons are easy to understand.

But yeah, must have been a rough time to live. Honestly, any time before... Now lol was tough.
