The Epic of Gilgamesh is not a "hero's journey." We're talking about the literary device of "band of good guys travels from point a to point b to defeat the evil entity." In any case, he's talking about modern literature.

The Hobbit is nowhere near a re-telling of Beowulf. >.>

that is not the hero's journey, the hero's journey is about an individual who starts small and goes on a journey to prove his worth, through this journey, this individual either through divine intervention or his own accomplishment grows and defeats whatever is at the final destination. That is the hero's journey, not the band of people going around places, but the growth that frodo has through the story is the hero's journey.

sry illya, but this is something the guy even admits in his notes, fine not re-telling, but pretty much inspired by beowulf story.

Yes, technically that's true. But that's the form it usually comes it.

I don't recall ever reading that the Hobbit was inspired in any way by Beowulf.

Lol. What Jorg said.

Species =/= Race
So I'm thinking of having like 4 Species
Humans
Elves
Demon Folk
Lizard Folk

but there are like 5 kinds of elves

all settings are generic until they are fleshed out, mine is pretty much a copy of mad max with monsters for example, or dresden files set in the future Chat Thread 7: Gedo Fabulous - Page 42 442579085 It isnt the concept its how your present your concept pika Chat Thread 7: Gedo Fabulous - Page 42 442579085

You don't have to use multiple types of elves. It's your setting.

I think Gilgamesh is technically Sumerian. But yeah.

Jason would be close. Hercules is a quest for redemption mostly with the Twelve Labors, so I don't think that really counts.

Hercules is like the definition of hero's journey, he didnt start small, but his entire quest was about accomplishing something.

Arrogance/Hubris is a large part of almost every single greek story, meaning they have to have some foundation that makes them so. Which means they usually don't start out small.

It's more medieval fashion to start out from peasant to king or what have you, since the stories were developed by the peasants instead of the whateveryouwouldcallmoderatelyrichgreeks. Take a look at rumplestiltskin. Common peasant to king's wife. Even King Arthur has a 'anyone can pull the sword is a king. The crazy cat lady? COME ON UP.' (I think it was like that anyways.)
