It's kinda like "To miss something" but missing is a verb, there is no state of missing in english, you simply miss something and then continue with life.

You can say "I'm sad" "I'm happy" but you can't say "I'm missing", it doesn't have the same impact like "Saudades".

You can miss being with you parents, but you can't have "Saudades" of your parents, unless it is impossible to meet them. In other words, "Saudades" has a feeling of missing something which has been lost and you can never get back. It is a longing to return to times long lost. It is the melancolic emotion that characterizes the portuguese culture quite well. We long for the time when the Portuguese Empire was the one on the top.

no no, nostalgic is a very similar but it's like a light version of it that you move on after. "Saudades" you don't move out of. It's kinda like depression, it lasts and lasts and lasts


actually this is something I'm learning. States and emotions in english have a much lighter conotations in comparison to their direct counter parts in portuguese. which is interesting

I was about to say nostalgia as well, but you're right that nostalgia has a more wistful connotation to it. Personally, I tend to associate feelings very strongly with memories, so I understand the concept you mean. When I think on past times I was happy, when things were easy and without stress, or when the family was together, times I would very much like to revisit even for a short time, it is a very heavy mixture of longing and happiness and sadness.

well it has to do history. Saudades has connection with the discovery age, the time when Portugal was an empire and how we lost all of that to become this small insignificant country. The British Empire still exist even if only in name.

Hmm. Well, still. I mean, you have that sentiment here too with older people (not even necessarily old, old people, but even middle-aged people talking about days past and how things were better then).
