... could bring in another character as the new main and have these two as background (if they are going into the shadows then probably give them a political viewpoint).

The new character doesn't need to be linked to these two by having a back-story/current-story completely separate from the emperor/witch scenario.

Though xir (his/her) life is affected by the changes, subtle or big, brought by the workings of either the prison escape or what the two do in the future to xir homeland/or xir current country of residence.

If not then the new MC can "accidentally" stumble into what the two do on an overall scale. This way you can still continue with the first two characters and have something fresh at the same time.

Or just scrap the first two as a whole for a long time and simply focus on a new beginning, concluding the new story or in the middle of the new story by having the new MC interacting with the other 2 by any means (direct or indirect). IE: xe does something that gains their attention.

~~~~~
Sometimes when one gets stuck.. its always good to start with a clean slate but keep the old stuff as vague reference so that one could link everything together when needed.
I would agree that adding other protagonist viewpoints to counter the two leads would help. It would give some contrasting viewpoints and subplots.
perparps going to Arcos' point of view as he travels through nations to gain their favor to rescue Scyther.
only for him to be hit by the news of a his escape + the rise of a witch that is slowly taking control of villages and moving towards the castle.
hmm the clash of two brothers scenario.
Arcos thinking that Scyther has turned sides thus Arcos becomes the stories hero who starts to rally people and wage a war against the witch and Scyther... only at the end does he realize the mistake he made and should have trusted his friend (the acts that he heard Scyther doing were too astrocious and out of character, that was made him doubt himself).
At that point, you could have either one get killed by the other or have Arcos team up with Scyther, realizing that his cause is much better on the larger scale of things and they then fight the rallied nations together who do not see eye to eye, mark Arcos as a villain too.
?
i think you have a misconception here. But then again it's normal since i didnt explain.
They aren't brothers. Scyther is war hero that is on his late thirties. He's just and honorable person with a lot of expectation and pressure on his back. He's naive and gulable, believing people he doesn't know in a heartbeat.
Arcos is quite differant. First of all he is more akin to a legend than to a hero. He's someone that has lived for longer than any man has and as long past his prime. A man who has surpassed the concept of mortality. He's likely seem his nation the moment it was even created. He's wise, cunning and powerful. He's suspicious of others but ultematly he fights for what he believes to be right and that is for the safety of others.
Thats said, their friendship started as a simple relationship of teach and student.
Scyther will joinned Thevana to escape prison, but with the intentions of being close to her so that he can kill her if she ever becomes a menace.
Arcos on the other hand will simply believe that Scyther was naive in trusting a witch and will gather an army to kill her and beat some sense into Scyther.
Neither is a villain. Both choose a path that leads to the same objective.
I assume that was directed at Shadow.
I was thinking Scyther would eventually fall for Thevana and become her general, thus necessitating a confrontation between him and his master.
he already fell for her, he just doesn't aknowledge it for now.
the thing about the two fighting would be insteresting, but I'm not sure I want it because I don't want to pick a side.
What I had originaly was Thevana would emprison Scyther in the final battle because she doesn't want him to let his emotions get in the way. And when she's confronted with Arcos. He goes on a long narration explaining the truth behind Thevana's and Scyther's relationship, as in the past Arcos had been in a similar position to Scyther. The two fight off, but Thevana proves to be too much.
The next scene would be Scyther entering the throne room just as Thevana kills Arcos.
This would then leave me two options. Either Scyther kills Thevana because she's too dangerous. Or he lets his emotions get the better of him and simply helps her up.
Hmm. Depends on what you want Scyther's character arc to be about. Is it about him realizing that peace and the good of all isn't worth sacrificing his happiness? Then he should spare her.
See, the problem I usually have with the whole "kill the person you love cause they're out of control" is that it never seems to tie in with any character arc. That's why HF stands out so much, cause they do it so well for Shirou and Sakura.
I was surprised, yes. How did she go from being the next emperor to an exiled witch in the mountains?
She wasn't that good at ruling others. A lot of people were revolting because they were not sastified with her and she step out of the scene.
She ran north because that's where her mother had come from. She thought since the curse came from there, maybe those would hold an answer. She was so very close to finding it too, until she delve too deep into it and got completely corrupted.
That was awfully considerate of her, instead of just, you know, smiting them all into submission.
