people don't naturaly get pissed over pragmatism. Pragmatism satisfies our brain's hunger for logic and sense. So even if people go "THAT SON OF A *****!" a part of their brain goes "But he has a point."

He had a point in betraying her to Caster. It served his purposes.

I must admit, I find it hard to hate pragmatic characters. Guys like Littlefinger, Roose Bolton, and Tywin Lannister tend to get a lot of hate for their actions, but I don't seem to mind cruelty to serve a purpose. It's cruelty for the sake of cruelty that I don't like.

But giving her over to Shinji and his attempted rape... that's pretty extreme. I found it pretty shocking that he would allow that, since I believe he always cared about Rin.

there are various forms of pragmatism, ruthless pragmatism is typicaly shun down upon because it messes to much with your morality. For example, using someone and them killing that person because you have no use for them is typicaly shun down upon, even if it's logical to do so(cause you know, once they know you use them they try to get vengeance). But using someone and then just leaving them be is typicaly looked up upon(it has to do with pleasing both the logical and emotional part of your brain).

Also Archer did protect Rin. If Archer simply opposed Shinji, he would get killed by Gil. So he did the smart move, manipulate Shinji, he stroke Shinji's ego and made a deal with him, gaining some time for Rin until Saber arrived. Probably also planning in advance to tell Saber about the situation to get her to go after Rin instead of meddling in the fight.

That's a good point.

Yes, I hoped he had some backup plan like that to keep anything from happening to Rin.
