Family Matters

It was still hard to believe he was home.

Jordan looked up, accepting the cup of cocoa his sister offered him with a smile.

"Thanks," he murmured, sipping at it with a sigh as he leaned back into the sofa, downy cushions of the sofa. Julia took a seat on the armchair to his right, setting her mug down on the coffee table without drinking. Jordan frowned.

"Is she all right?" he asked. Julia nodded, her gaze drifting toward the stairs.

"Yes, sleeping comfortably," she sighed. "Still, it worries me. She's been agitated lately, and I can't seem to figure out why."

Jordan ran a hand through his short hair. Their mother was never in the best of health, but this strange turn in behavior had made things worse.

"There have been two deaths recently. Maybe it just has her on edge," he said. Both Mr. Turner, an elderly man at the end of the road, and Timmy Wilson, a young boy with tuberculosis a few houses down, had died within the last couple weeks. It seemed bad luck, but Jordan had no reason to believe it was anything other than coincidence. Nothing indicated any similarities in their deaths.

"Maybe. I just wish-"

Julia's voice was cut off by a thump from above. It sounded as though their mother's cane had fallen over.

"She shouldn't be up," Julia said, getting to her feet and hurrying for the stairs. Jordan followed after her. The hallway was dark, but they both knew it too well to get to tripped up. When they reached the door at the end, Julia opened it.

And screamed.

Their mother was hanging halfway out the window, ready to follow. She was struggling, straining to get out. Julia ran for her, but it was too late.

Or, rather, it would have been. Julia could not see, but Jordan reached out his hand, holding his mother in place with his telekinesis. It was only for a moment, just long enough for Julia to grab onto her.

"Help me!" Julia yelled, and he rushed over to her side to help drag their mother back into bed. She was still reaching for the window, protesting.

"Shut it, for God's sake," Julia whispered, tears in her eyes. Jordan crossed over to it, but his hand lingered. For the briefest moment, he heard it.

Spoiler:

Singing.

Mati was practically living in the wild, and time to time he worked for part time job.

He tried to live 'normal'...

However, such moment end it when Hannah appeared in front of him again.

"You..." Said Mati, staring at the reaper, his reaction showed mixed feelings.

Hannah stared at Mati coldly, "There's a new condition. Whenever you use your true flames, I will take your friends with me."

Mati then burst into the maniac laughter, "Friends? I don't have one! Thanks to this power, I lost everyone already!"
 
The he quickly rushed to Hannah, "So just end my life here already! I do not want to live here!"

Then Hannah slapped Mati, with a force to knock him to the ground. "You insolent child, don't you dare threat your life so lightly. Many would give everything they have to live."

Hannah summoned her scythe, "Sure I could end your life here and now, your existence made me lost one unique and dear friend of mine." Then she swung her scythe.

However, the scythe made the noise of hitting the ground, and disappeared. "But, if I do... I would not be able to face her in person."

Hannah turned her back, and then disappeared.

Mati tightened his fist, and slammed it to the ground. The fist left crack on the ground. Mati tightened his jaws. "I want to see my family too! I want to see them... But... what if they don't want to see me...?"

Mati let his head touch the ground and covered his eyes with his hands.

"I wish I could help, but Ava and I picked up a wendigo trail near her place," Pip said. Jordan sighed and dragged a hand through is hair.

"Yeah, all right," he murmured. He wasn't going to bother asking why Pip had been near Ava's house in the first place.

"You know," Pip began hesitantly, and Jordan could see the suggestion coming. "You could always ask-"

"No."

There was silence between them. After a moment, Jordan could hear Ava's voice on the other end, and Pip speaking back to her.

"Sorry, Jordan, I have to go," Pip said. "Let me know how things turn out."

Jordan muttered his goodbyes and hung up. Pip was a lore expert, so his ace in the sleeve was officially out.

"You said you knew an expert who could help," Julia said, sitting down across from him. Jordan said nothing, wondering who else he could contact. Maybe Sera could refer him to someone? Their mandatory vacation wasn't quite up, but that hadn't stopped Ava and Pip, it seemed.

"I'm going to call Dr. Newcastle then," Julia said, standing up to get her phone.

"No, wait."

Jordan put a hand to stop her, gritting his teeth. Getting in some civilian mixed into this wouldn't help. He would just have to bite the bullet.

"Just let me make one more call," he asked. Julia bit her lip, then nodded.

Mati's phone began to ring. Once he answered it, there was silence on the line before a familiar voice spoke.

"Mati? I... need your help."

[OOC: You can timeskip to Mati reaching Jordan's house in the next post if you like.]

Mati hesitated, but he answered. The dead eyes of Mati breathed live as he heard the voice on the other side, but it also worried him just like old days.

"I will be there."

Even though, he was not so sure if his presence is wanted there, but he couldn't say no to the person on the other side of the phone.

It was Jordan, and how it ended with him a month ago, Mati knew Jordan needed a help, desperately.

The door opened several seconds after Mati rang. It was not Jordan who answered, though the resemblance was there. The young woman had a cute, heart-shaped face and smooth brown hair in a ponytail.

"Hi. I guess you're Jordan's friend? I'm Julia."

She opened the door to let Mati inside and led him into the living room. Jordan was seated on the sofa, looking a bit uncomfortable. Julia directed him to the armchair by the fireplace and sat next to Jordan.

"This is the specialist?" she asked, sounding a bit incredulous. Jordan scratched at his neck.

"He's... very successful for his age," he replied. Julia looked between them for a few moments, brow furrowed.

"Did you guys used to date or something?" she asked. "I'm sensing some unresolved-"

"Julia, could you give us a minute?" Jordan interrupted, glaring at her. Julia shrugged and got off the sofa.

"All right. I should check on mom anyway. I'll be back."

Julia gave Mati a smile and headed up the stairs. Despite Jordan's request, he wasn't leaping right into any discussion.

"Thanks for coming," he said after a few moments. "I know you didn't have to."

Mati was surprised that a woman had come to greet him, "Oh...uhh...yeah, hi, I am Mati."

Mati could see resemblance of Jordan in her, he was not so sure what to think about. Was it Jordan's sister?

Mati bite his lips and sat down where Julia led him to sit; Julia asked Jordan, "This is the specialist?" and Mati looked at Jordan and Julia. Feeling that he had to say something he opened his mouth, but before anything escape his mouth, Jordan said it in his defense. 

Julia looked at him and Jordan, once again and Mati avoided her eye contact. Then Julia, like his brother, quickly moved the topic to their awkward atmosphere between him and Jordan. 

Thankfully, Jordan had sent her off. Mati gave nervous smile at Julia who smiled at him as she went upstairs. As Julia finally disappeared from the sight, Mati was thinking that he had to start the conversation, but before he could Jordan did.

"Thanks for coming, I know you didn't have to." Some how, that did not come to nicely; instead, it pained his heart.


"I promised, didn't I? So... uh... what's going on?"

He promised... and here he was. It should have made Jordan happy - and it did, if he had to admit it - but it also made him uncomfortable. It made him second-guess his words that night a couple months ago, and he didn't want to think he'd made a mistake.

Talking about the immediate problem seemed to make things a bit easier for Jordan. He sat up a bit straighter in his seat and looked toward the stairs.

"It's my mom," he said, frowning. "Something's been agitating her. The other night, she actually tried climbing right out her window. We got up there just in time. I actually had to use my power to keep her from falling right out. Fortunately, Julia didn't notice."

He went quiet for a moment, thinking of that night. So much could have gone wrong. Their mother could be dead right now. Or Julia could be looking at him like some kind of monster.

Monster... it was hard not to make the connection between his power and Mati. It was what really connected them that first time. Now, he wasn't really sure where they stood.

"Anyway," Jordan went on, "when we got her back in bed, and I went to close the window, I heard... singing."

He looked over at Mati.

"Maybe it's just coincidence. Maybe there isn't a case. But it's my mom. I have to be sure."

"A song you say?" Mati asked, his eyebrows furrowed. "I only know few monsters that could do that and one of them is siren..." Mati was thinking hard as in what others it could be. 

"... Another possibility could be banshee..." Mati curled his lips, he could only name few and those are the two he was aware of. 

"I mean for Banshee, it would be more like a scream, so I cannot be so sure... But Siren, if it had a chance, it could have infected your mother. In order to discover them, we probably needs lot of mirrors and be weary of even those who are close to us."

Mati looked around the room where he was, "Do you have hand mirrors? We probably have to meet every individuals who your mother met for past few days." Then Mati bite his lips, looking at Jordan uncomfortably. "I know you might hate me if I say this, but the first person we have to check, probably has to be your sister..." Mati said it in whisper, "Okay, I might be over-reacting... But, it's better to be careful, right?" He asked Jordan, not so sure how Jordan would react to what he had said.

Siren or banshee? Jordan frowned. He hadn't dealt with either in the past, so he couldn't be sure which it might be.

"Hand mirrors?" he repeated. Could both be detected with them? He'd heard that some monsters would only show their true appearances with reflections.

"Yeah, we've got some around," he said. "I'll find them."

He was trying to go through a mental list of people who might have had contact with his mother and how he could reasonably flash them with a mirror when he stopped cold at Mati's suggestion? Julia? The idea was terrible. He didn't want to consider it, but...

"You're right," he sighed. "We have to be sure."

Julia was just returning, looking mildly pleased.

"Mom's stable and comfortable," she reported. "Doesn't seem to remember what she did last night."

Mati nodded as Jordan agreed with him to check on his sister. If she was, then they really had to look for Jordan's real sister as well.

Speaking of devil, Jordan's sister got back to them. Mati looked at Jordan's direction, hoping he get the signal that he should use this chance to see if she is or not.

Then Mati looked at Julia, "Is she asleep? If not, I would like to meet her." He asked politely.

Julia nodded to Mati and directed him toward the stairs.

"Just try not to get her agitated," she said, frowning. "She needs her rest, especially after what happened."

Jordan watched Mati go, then turned to Julia. He didn't think it likely at all, especially given her reaction to what had happened, but he had to be thorough.

"Hey, Julia, you've got something," he said, indicating her face. She blinked, then rubbed at the spot.

"No, you'd better go look in the mirror," he continued. Julia shot him a puzzled look, then headed into the bathroom to look at the mirror. Jordan peered around the doorway, relieved to see that her reflection was perfectly normal.

"There's nothing there. What are you on about?" Julia scowled. Jordan shrugged.

"I guess you got it off."

Julia rolled her eyes, then headed back into the living room. Well, it wasn't his most subtle work, but it got the job done. He headed for the stairs to check on Mati.

Mati climbed up the stairs gently, and had trust in Jordan that he would do what he must to check on Julia's real identity.

But from how she had caring eyes, and how her emotions were honest with what she was saying... Mati doubted she was the siren that they were looking for...

Even then, he had to make sure.

Mati knocked on the door, entering ever gently. "Mrs. Blake, my name is Mati. I am a friend of Jordan. I just wanted to say hello and see how you doing. I hope I am not disturbing your rest."

Jordan reached the top of the stairs and heard Mati already speaking to his mother. He paused in the doorway, observing them.

Although his mother was only in her fifties, she certainly seemed older than that. The frailty of her health seemed to contribute most to that, giving her a very pale complexion and thin frame. She smiled pleasantly enough at Mati, her eyes lighting up a bit at the mention of Jordan.

"Oh, how nice. Did you serve with him?" she asked. "I've gotten so many letters from other soldiers who were with him. So well liked and respected, my Jordan."

Jordan felt equal parts pleased and sad to hear her say that. He was so glad to know how proud she was of him, but it hurt to think of how his absence might have affected her.

"Unfortunately, no. I am not." Mati replied gently, "But, he and I met him in the medical wing. He was injured a bit and I patched him up. I got to know him after that. I am really proud to call him as my friend." Mati complemented his partner and scanned the room.

He was looking for something that could hint him of what she did before all this happen.

After quick scan of the room, Mati smiled back warmly at Jordan's mother. "Well, only fault he has is that he worries too much." Said Mati and slowly came close to Mrs. Blake's side, sitting on the side of her bed. "the reason I came here, Mrs. Blake, Jordan told me that he is worry about your health. So, I just came here to take your blood sample so I could ease his baseless worries. I do, of course, completely understand if you do not wish to give me your blood sample, but if you do, I think I could definitely have something to convince him to worry less."

Mrs. Blake smiled fondly at the talk of Jordan.

"Oh yes. He always cared too much about people. Has a heart bigger than he knows what to do with, my boy," she said. Jordan watched it all from the hallway, feeling a pang in his heart. After all the time he'd spent away, avoiding seeing her, she still held no ill will against him. He wasn't sure if that made him feel better or worse.

"If you think it's necessary, by all means," his mother continued, putting out her arm. "I'm used to it by now."

Jordan stepped into the room, smiling at both of them. He stepped over to his mother's side and took her other hand, nodding to Mati as his partner took the other arm to draw blood.

Mati carefully take out a new needle to draw the blood, as it was done, he smiled at Mrs. Blake, "It's done, thank you so much." Mati gently stood up with the blood sample, "Well then, I will now take the blood sample to test it out. Please take care." And he left, leaving Jordan and his mother.

Mati could probably use the nearby hospital with his doctor license, analyzing the oxytocin level of the blood. If the result shows what he believes it to be, he probably need to ready the weapon to kill that siren with Jordan's mother blood.

As he came down from the stairs, Mati curled his lips; rethinking of what he had saw in the room, asking a question if there was something that could give him the clue of where this siren might be hiding.

Jordan watched Mati leave with the blood sample before turning to his mother and kissing her softly on the forehead.

"He's a very nice young man," she said. "I'm glad you have friends like him."

Jordan smiled. He wondered what his mother would think if she knew about the strain between them - not that she would understand the circumstances at all.

"Get some rest, okay?" he said. He turned and headed downstairs.

"Jordan?" she murmured, just as he reached the door. Jordan turned to see a weary look on her face.

"I'm sorry to make you worry," she murmured. "Sorry to put such a strain on you and your sister."

Jordan's heart ached at those words.

"Don't say that," he said firmly. "You're not a burden. Ever."

She smiled, though faintly. Jordan thought better of shutting the door and left it slightly ajar, just in case, before heading back to the living room. Julia was sipping tea and watching a house hunting program.

"Your friend just left," she said. Jordan sat beside her and closed his eyes.

Friend...

Mati bite his lips; the blood sample of Mrs. Blake showed sign of those who were infected by Siren. Without further ado, Mati had coated two bronze dagger with Mrs. Blake's blood.

As all the preparations were ready, he called Jordan. "Hey, it's me. As I suspected, we got Siren on your area. We should look for the places where your mother had spent her time. By the way, were there some death in your area that I should be aware of? Maybe they are all connected to one place."

Jordan felt a chill in his blood at the idea that his mother was being targeted. But there was an upside - at least, they knew what they were up against.

"There were a few deaths in the area," he said, recalling his sister's words. "All people either old or sick. I'll see if I can find anything else out."

Julia had just walked back into the room to announce dinner was ready.

"Hey, Jules," Jordan said, following her into the kitchen, "has mom had any guests lately?"

Julia stopped stirring a pot to sample the sauce, added a dash of salt, then set the spoon down.

"A couple of her friends from around the neighborhood. And Dr. Newcastle. He does housecalls sometimes and writes out mom's prescription."

Jordan stared off into the distance, his mind working fast. After a moment, he grabbed his jacket and keys and headed for the door.

"Meet me at this address," he texted Mati. It was time to check out if all the victims had been receiving house calls.

"Jordan! What about dinner?" Julia called after him, only to be answered by the slamming of the front door.

"Sure." Mati replied and started rushing to his car, checking his text to the locations.

Mati arrived to the location, and found Jordan with his own car. "Hey, so, where are we?" Mati asked looking at the building in front of them.

Jordan nodded to Mati when he arrived. The two of them stared up at the house, a nice suburban with white siding and dark shutters. It was in a cul-de-sac, a few blocks away from Jordan's house.

"This is one of the families that have had a recent death in the neighborhood," Jordan said quietly. "I have a hunch they've all been receiving visits from the same person - who just might be our monster."

Leading the way up the driveway, Jordan reached the door and knocked. A middle-aged woman, with curly brown hair, answered. She looked tired and worn, but smiled graciously at them and let them in. She introduced herself as Audrey Wilson.

"Yes, I know your mother. She and your sister sent some very nice flowers after my son Timmy died," she said to Jordan after she'd seated him and Mati on the sofa. "Very nice woman."

"Thank you," Jordan said, attempting a smile. "We don't want to take much of your time, Mrs. Wilson. We just want to ask if you were getting house calls from Dr. Newcastle as well."

Audrey titled her head, surprised by the line of questioning.

"Oh yes, he was in and out quite often in the days before Timmy's death," she sighed. "Timmy wasn't doing well at the time, and we wanted Dr. Newcastle to look over him."

Jordan exchanged looks with Mati. They couldn't confirm it just yet, but they did have a connection between two victims and this doctor.

"How did you find out about Dr. Newcastle?" Mati asked carefully. He wanted to know what kind of medium this monster was using to find his victim and also perhaps to kill themselves.

Was it a phone call? Or was it a personal visit?

Mati did not know, but that thing must have somehow infected them with its venom too.

"And did he delivered his own medicine?" He asked in addition.

Audrey Wilson looked puzzled and tried to think.

"Oh, he stopped by. He had recently moved into the neighborhood and wanted to get to know the neighbors. He was a bit old-fashioned, you know. Said he liked the personal touch of old physicians actually visiting their patients in their homes."

Jordan tried not to let the agitation show in his expression. It was sounding wore all the time. This mother had no idea she'd let a monster into her house, let a monster kill her child.

"Well, yes, he did bring his own medicine," he said. "Said it was better than writing a prescription."

So, they knew who it was and how he was doing it. The only question was - why?

"Thank you, Mrs. Wilson. Well do you know his address by any chance?"

Mati asked if she knew him well enough to know where he stayed; probably she did and that's why she let him come. Or maybe she is, too, poisoned with his venom.

Siren felt pleasure in torture of human or what humans would do for the name of the love... From what Mati heard from his father, some of them driven a human to the point of doing massacre...

Whatever the reason why this siren was here and whatever he was doing, it was no good and it must be stopped before it tries to get everyone in this town to be crazy about him.

Mrs. Wilson did know the doctor's address, and she scribbled it down for them. After thanking her for her time, Mati and Jordan left the house and headed back to the cars.

"All right," Jordan murmured, brows furrowed as he studied the address. "Let's pay Dr. Newcastle a visit."

It wasn't much of a drive. Dr. Newcastle's house was at the end of the road, which wound up along a hill and up to an old, iron gate. The gate was open, however, so they passed without hindrance up to the door. The door was answered by an elderly gentleman with neatly combed grey hair and mustache. He introduced himself as Dr. Newcastle and allowed them inside.

Jordan was tempted to attack Newcastle right on the spot, but they couldn't afford to get this wrong. They had to make sure it was really him.

"Can I get you anything to drink?" Newcastle asked once they'd been seated in the parlor.

"No, thank you. We don't want to take up too much of your time," Jordan answered as politely as he could manage.

"Nonsense," Newcastle replied, smiling. "Time is something I have in abundance."

He disappeared out toward the kitchen, leaving Mati and Jordan alone.
