| It was very good. They had some other great ones. The Justinian one was good too, as was the Hannibal one. Zulus were pretty good. _________________ ~Vae Victis - The Black Lily Blooms~ | |

| well for starters it was a one of it's first kind.
Back then books were written as narrators, diaries, letters or theater plays.
Unlike other books where although they were ultematly wroten for a reader, they had a speach pattern that made the ilusion of it being for someone else, like someone telling story to a friend, or guarding one's memories for later reading, etc... This was one of the first book in english literature written for a reader.
Second, the author used a lot of digretions. To put it in simple words. First volume the main character is about to be born, but only the end of volume 2 was the main character finally born. In the middle the author just talk about all kinds of random stuff that had no connection with the plot.
Third, the book is filled with strange things which you will never find in normal literature. For example, at one point the author encounters a sexy widow and he wants to describe her to the reader, but instead says that describing her would be an injustice to her and as such invites the reader to pick up a pen and describe her instead. Another example which I find most fascinating is when a character dies, followed by that character's death are two pages is pure black, in personal letters the writter of the book states that the reason behind the black pages was to express that there was a flood of emotions that could never be put in paper to describe how much he felt at the death of his friend, represented by the flood of ink that made the black pages. |
