It’s a balancing act, I think, between the author’s vision and the reader’s.

For instance, Snape in Harry Potter. It’s obvious by the end, and by Harry’s words to his son, that Snape is supposed to be seen as a tragic hero. However, while I can recognize the tragic aspects of Snape’s past and his sacrificial deeds on behalf of the Wizarding World, I don’t think it makes up for all his reprehensible, bullying deeds toward Harry and countless others. In short, I see Snape as one of the “Good Guys,” but not a good guy (as in a good person).

What is this in relation to anyway?

Oh it started with simple picture that showed
"Book: The curtain color is blue"
"Teacher: The color blue represents the emotion of what main protagonist is going through and etc..."
"Author: The curtain color is blue"

Then you know, comments like 'I don't like this picture as English Professor' and I was like 'Why? Isn't it showing that you have to balance it out?'

Then whole argument happened~

Yeah, that’s what I meant by not every interpretation is valid. Sometimes a blue curtain is just a blue curtain. Other times, such as in the movie Vertigo, the color/lighting of a room really does have a meaning and intent behind it.

Yes! I agree that some books are full with symbolism, and movies, I mean every good movie so far I know they used colors and lighting with intention.

But I disagree using reader response criticism in every literature, I mean, I don't think if it's used initially, as a starting point in reading the book and such shouldn't be bad. But, in order to be really think hard about the book itself, I still think author's intention or author's purpose must be counted for.

Well, it just me I guess... I mean some work out there, they are not appreciated enough because 'reader' did not like it. But when you see the intention why it was written in such way.... oh, the beauty and the secrets

Yes, it is a shame sometimes. There are quite a few things that I’ve read/watched and appreciated what the creators did, despite the negative reception from readers or audiences.
