Well, life is a balance of good and bad things happening to people. So the rp should reflect as much. :0

Most of the times, bad things find the people first

And after that people start to realize what was good.

Then they work hard to bring the good back

I think that's just because people have a tendency to take "good" for granted. A completely relaxing, unremarkable day might seem dull, but after a really stressful week, it seems like a Godsend. Really, any day where you're in good health and nothing wrong happens is a day to be thankful for.

Of course, I am not saying there aren't people who lives their daily life in thankfulness

I have seen people who lives like that, and most of them who lives such way, they are not that wealthy, but just enough wealth to survive.

Then I am back with these people who keep on complaining how happy they would be if they had great wealth...

Well, I would definitely be happy to have a lot of money. XD But yeah, happiness isn't dependent on it. There are plenty of unhappy rich people. Happiness is a state of mind.

Yes

I am not saying having money is evil or bad, but if you want to be happy, it's not the money that brings happiness.

It's how you see your life that could make you smile every day

Very likely.

Anyone want to discuss a character I'm working on for my book series? I want to know if she evokes sympathy without being too pitiable. I don't want her to come across like Harry Potter lol.

Well, perhaps give her simple past

Nothing too extra ordinary, but have her life being happy until something hits her life....

And have her surrounded with caring people, who maybe able to help the readers to understand that what she's going through....

In any case, that's what I could think of if I wanted to make a character that could be sympathized but not pitiful

PostSubject: Re: Genesis Crisis: Resurgence OOC V   Tue May 02, 2017 3:56 pm

Yeah, that's not what I have lol.

Anna Jacobs is the only child of Andrew and Melissa Jacobs. Andrew was the pastor of a church where a friend of Melissa's was a member of the congregation. Melissa became a Christian through the church, and got to know Pastor Jacobs. They fell in love and got married. Melissa only had her mother, and Andrew didn't approve of her mother, Edna. Edna wasn't a Christian, and was a salty, swearing, cantankerous woman who grew tough and bitter having to raise Melissa as a single mother. Melissa felt a bit torn between the two, but it wasn't until Anna was born that she decided Andrew was right. Edna wouldn't be a good influence on Anna, and she told Edna she wasn't allowed to be around her granddaughter until she cleaned up her ways. Naturally, Edna became very bitter at this treatment and stopped contact with her daughter.

Anna grew up oblivious to this in a very loving home. She was very social, outgoing, and athletic. She had a passion for gymnastics and wanted to grow up to be a gymnast. Her parents were hesitant about allowing this, but they finally agreed to let her get lessons and compete. And at her first minor league competition, she won gold. It should have been a triumphant moment, but she realized her parents weren't there.

When she tried to call them, she found out why.

Her parents car had been hit on the way to the competition by someone texting and driving. Neither of them survived.

Anna's only relative nearby was Edna, and she was sent to live with her. Despite agreeing to take her in, Edna didn't seem pleased at all to have her around. She wasn't outright abusive, but she wasn't certainly hostile and closed off. Anna can't figure out why - after all, she doesn't know how it makes Edna feel to be suddenly burdened with the responsibility of a granddaughter she was never allowed to know.

Anna wasn't one of those people whose faith falters in the face of tragedy. Quite the opposite. She latched onto the idea that God must have a purpose and plan for all this.

At first, she thought it was to help her grandmother become less crusty and mean, but it became quickly apparent she wasn't up to that task. Instead, she looked to her school. She'd had to transfer from her private Christian school to a public school when she moved. So she thought she could change her school for the better. She managed to befriend some girls on the power cheer squad by helping with their fundraisers, especially the leader named Zoe.

One time they were hanging out, Zoe mentioned how tiring it can sometimes be to always know she's being judged by her wardrobe. Anna already thought the dress code was too lax, so this sparked the idea to try to get a uniform implemented. Surprisingly, the principal and school board seemed to go for it.

The students... not so much. They were pissed about this change, especially Zoe. She found out Anna had used her words in the pitch Anna made to the principal and was furious at this violation of trust. Mad as hell and wanting to save her reputation, she very publicly breaks contact with Anna.

Feeling completely lost, Anna is now struggling to figure out what God's purpose in all this is when all she seems to do is fail.

And then, that night, a star falls from the sky... and lands behind her house.

That's where the story proper begins. It's a lot of backstory, and it's a struggle to squeeze it all in without feeling dumped on the reader's lap.

Okay, so here are my thoughts:

Her backstory per se doesn't evoke pity, if I'd pity anyone, it would be her mother.

Anna is relatable, which is generally a good thing, however, I am missing some flaws. I mean except that she doesn't inmediately see the purpose of God's plan for putting her in that situation, I think she is a bit too...positive? The hardships of her life don't really seem to have impacted her, if that makes sense. Kind of like 'Your parents died? - Oh too bad, but I'm sure this is God's plan, so it's okay.' (I hope that illustrates a little what I mean)

I'm assuming the whole story with her grandmother will come up again, otherwise the whole setup was wasted if you just focus on the school and the situation there. Then no one will care if she lives with her estranged grandmother, a neighbor or an orphanage.

So... that's all for now m.m Generally I do find her sympathetic and relatable, just don't exaggerate the faith thing

Anna's mother, Melissa? Interesting. Why do you say that?

It's not positive so much as a coping mechanism. And while I don't think faith is a flaw, her desperation to believe that there's a higher purpose at work makes her easily manipulated when angels appear and start telling her she has a calling from Heaven.

The book begins with her at her grandmother's. She's only there for a chapter or two before going to school. That's another chapter or two before she runs off to pursue her visions and is whisked off into a battle she's not prepared for.

Yes, Melissa. Because the man she loves doesn't approve of her mother and in the end she has to chose between the two. I mean, logically I understand the decision she made and rationally it was certainly correct. But those are the decisions that tear your family apart and can mess you up for your entire life and in my opinion that much more pityful than simply losing your parents. They are dead, it wasn't your fault. You can eventually move on from that. But that family member you gave up is still alive and it was your decision, hence your fault (at least partially) and if you're not careful you conscience will give you hell for that.

Ah okay then. Well I think you're good then. And I don't think she comes out as Harry Potter-esque

I'm glad it seems like a difficult situation. And honestly, I think everyone suffers to some degree. I mean from Edna's perspective, it's easy to feel bitter and resentful when your daughter suddenly becomes religious, and she and her husband think you're not good enough for them.

Of course, that's not a totally accurate picture, but it is her viewpoint.

And unfortunately, Anna's inheriting a situation she had no say in.

And yet, I sympathize with Melissa and Andrew's decision. My hope was to create a morally grey situation, and it sounds like it worked.
