Magic was a tricky thing.

It was powerful. It was dangerous. It was versatile. It was thrilling, engaging, fascinating. It was insatiable.

But, sometimes, it lacked subtlety.

That was unfortunate. Because the Grand Coven didn't care what magic you dabbled in. They didn't care what you did, or who you harmed. They only cared that you kept it quiet.

But some people just didn't have it in them. They didn't have the talent for discretion to begin with, or they let the power get to their head.

Yes, that was unfortunate. Because lack of subtlety got you killed.

Mati closed his eyes and leaned his back on car's seat; he was finally going to make this car as his.

"You are funny one." The reaper commented. Mati eyebrows furrowed, "Why do you say that?"

Hannah crossed her arms, curled her lips. "You could have just bought the car with the money your parents had left with you. Why do you have to work hard to get it paid."

Mati smiled at Hannah, "Well it's because, one, hunters don't get paid. Two, It's because I want to do so."

Hannah shook her head and then she disappeared, leaving him with a newspaper. Mati sighed and smiled, he took a week off as with an excuse of broken arm, and now he was about to do what he did before, hunting.

Mati eyebrows were furrowed, it looked like it was a witch's doing... He called Pip, "So Pip, I am back. Going to Virginia to investigate the so called mysterious death of the woman. Do I need to request for partner or is there someone working on the case already?"

"Hi there," Pip answered cheerfully. "Hope you had a good rest. Fortunately for you, Sera's had her hands tied up with this Van Helsing thing, so she barely noticed."

When Mati mentioned the case, Pip searched for what he had on it.

"No, we didn't assign anyone to it. We're short on hands at the moment, so if you think you can manage it alone, then go for it. Keep in touch."

It would seem Mati was flying solo on this case.

[OOC: You can go ahead and have Mati arrive in town in your next post to speak with the police.]

"Alright, I will let you know about the progress."

Mati smiled, almost like grinning. He was going to work alone for the first time and he really like that idea; for the first time he doesn't need to be careful with what he was.

But, of course, he should be careful about his interaction with police officers. "Hey, I am here to investigate Victoria Parke's death." He told the police officer's front desk, flashing his badge.

The policeman at the desk looked up from his work, narrowing his eyes. He looked a bit like a bulldog, and just as friendly. His gaze flickered to the deepening shadows of the evening sky to the man in front of him.

"It's kind of late," he said grumpily. But seeing that Mati was not going to be so easily deterred, he sighed and headed back out. A few minutes later, he returned with the files and autopsy report.

"Here," the man said, handing them over. "I suppose you'll be wanting to see the scene. You want me to escort you out there?"

It was evident that every inch of the man was screaming "say no!" but he waited for Mati's reply regardless.

Mati could see that man was unwilling to go through the scene of the crime. To Mati as long as he could go inside the crime scene it did not matter. "Well, I just need someone to give me the address of where it happened." Mati said gently smiling at officer who looked in relief.

"By the way, was there something made you all uncomfortable a part from how victim died?" He asked, casually.

The policeman stopped short, his expression darkening. He looked around the office - unnecessary, as there wasn't a soul in sight - before turning back to Mati.

"I don't know how much stock I put in that hocus pocus stuff," he said quietly. "But there was something off about that place and that woman. Gave me the creeps. Not just me. All of us, really."

He scribbled down the address and slid the paper across to Mati before nodding.

"Good luck," he muttered.

Mati nodded in acknowledgement, "You have a great day too." as if it did not matter to him.

He came to his car, put down the files beside the driving seat, and started his car engine without much thought about what officer just said, and he drove off to the address he was given.

Mati arrived to the house of the dead woman, Mati stared at the house blankly. It somewhat reminded him of one of those horror films that had so called witch who tried to kill everyone she loved.

That movie did not end well for the witch, unfortunately. She was killed by the person who she couldn't kill.

Mati shook his head, and sighed. "Need to focus." he commented, and casually walked towards the house of the dead woman.

As soon as Mati unlocked the door, he could sense something was wrong. It only took peering around the corner into the living room to see why.

Someone was standing in the middle of the murder scene. Someone quite obviously not a policeman.

Spoiler:

"Well, damn," the man muttered. He stood up from the coffee table bearing a bowl filled with spell ingredients, a circle formed around it in chalk.

"You come to deal with indiscreet witches," he sighed, "And you get caught making a trace spell. Guess that makes me a hypocrite."

With a lazy flick of his hand, the front door slammed shut behind Mati and locked itself.

"Now, I know your first instinct is going to be to do something stupid," the man said. "But I'd really appreciate it if you would just hold still, and we - or you, rather - can forget all about this little incident."

Mati eyes stared at the man for a moment, and then he sighed. "I thought Pip told me I was going to work alone in this thing." He commented.

Mati spotted the bowl that the man was preparing, and the circle... tracking spell. He saw Pip doing it and with his mother being Queen of witches, it did not take long for Mati to understand what was going on. "Firstly, I don't think you could come up with proper spell to make me forget what I saw, the spells many witches uses these days only works on average human." He said it in honesty, it was up to the man to believe it or not that he was no average human.

Mati casually studied the magic circle, "So you already know who we are tracking down? Impressive work, partner." He said it complimenting tone, his eyes looked into the man. "Name's Mati, so what's your name?"

There was a moment of utter silence as the man stared at Mati with a blank expression.

"Eh?" he murmured, looking baffled. He brought a hand to his chin and stroked it, looking thoughtful.

"Oh, I get it. Hunter," he said, sighing. "Hate to burst your bubble, kid, but I'm not your partner."

He could have kept up the farce, but it would have been a pain to play pretend and drag his feet. He pulled out a hex bag from the pocket of his suit jacket and smiled.

The Grand Coven and the Men of Letters were supposed to have a cease-fire of sorts between them. The Men of Letters didn't have the resources, even now, to devote to a costly war to extinguish the coven. And the coven was perfectly content to let the MoL do it's duty, as long as it didn't touch them.

But that didn't extend to working together. The hunter had walked in on the wrong case.

"Like I said," the witch told him. "Hold still, and this will be a lot less messy."

He hurled the sleeping hex at Mati, hoping for a quick end to things.

Mati quickly stepped away, his eyes narrowed at the man. "You are not?" Mati quickly grasped what he was as he pulled out a hex bag.

"Oh...."

As the bag was tossed at Mati's direction, Mati quickly respond at man's action with quick side step, and before hex bag reach the ground, he rushed in to get closer to the man, as he reach the man, he was planning to give the man a push towards the couch, by tipping the man's balance with his inherited strength.

The witch sighed as Mati dodged the sleeping hex with surprising speed and moved toward him for the attack.

"They always choose the hard way," he said, waving his hand. The high-backed arm chair in the corner of the room flew through the air and crashed into Mati, pinning him back against the wall.

The witch moved forward with casual swagger, his eyes narrowed on Mati.

"Now, hold still," he said, reaching for Mati's forehead. "Or I'll scramble your brains like eggs just out of spite."

[OOC: You can have Mati break through the chair and knock the witch to the ground to subdue him.]

Mati groaned as the chair pinned him to the wall, the man's hand reached for Mati's forehead. Mati smirked, "And I said that it won't work on me."

The chair that pinned him to the wall broke as he gave a powerful punch, letting the chair fall apart in front of him. Without any hesitation, he quickly move into the witch and pinned him to the ground, giving him a hard slam to the floor.

"Seriously... how about we call it even and cooperate. I have my reasons for hunting them and it seems like you have yours."

The witch's eyes flew open in surprise as Mati burst through the chair and tackled him to the ground. They collided into the coffee table, upending the bowl the witch had been preparing. The ingredients were sent scattering across the floor as the bowl hit the ground with a crash.

The witch gave a grunt of equal parts pain and surprise as hit the ground hard. Squinting up at Mati, he gave a sigh and shrugged.

"The Grand Coven would have my ass for working with hunter. But screw 'em. I don't like them anyway."

Mati helped him up off the floor, and he dusted his jacket off as he surveyed the young man a few moments.

"Neal Cassidy," he said at last, offering a hand. He cast a glance at his sabotaged spell and sighed.

"Well, you went and screwed up my spell. So much for the easy way."

Mati gave him a firm hand shake, "Matityahu Grey, call me Mati." He looked at the sabotaged spell and the messed up crime scene.

"Well, what do you need to set up the spell again?" Mati asked, looking at the broken bowl that had ingredients. Mati couldn't really make up what were the ingredients that Neal used it for his spell and he wasn't sure he had them. Pip used some of the ingredients and Mati forgotten about replenishing them. Well after this job, Mati will be definitely getting new supplies. Besides, he was using it without his mother's permission.

"Well, if it's going to take awhile, gathering information about possible candidate shouldn't be hard right? I mean you already had someone in mind, no?"

Neal folded his arms, looking annoyed.

"I guess you're an amateur in magic," he said, brushing the edge of the broken bowl with the tip of his shoe. "If this had been an ordinary tracking spell - trying to track an individual, that is - it wouldn't be too hard to replicate. But tracing magic is a much more difficult task. You have to do it while the signs are still fresh. By the time we were to get the right ingredients, it would be pointless."

With a snap of his fingers, the mess that they had made vanished into thin air.

"So," Neal continued, sitting down on the sofa and crossing his legs. "It looks like we're going to have to do this the hard way and figure out who would want to hex Victoria."

Mati curled his lips, it looked like his impatience made him waste his time. May be he should have just left and let the witch take care of the job by himself.

Mati sighed and sat on the other chair. "Well, it seems like you know the victim. I am guessing Victoria was a witch too?" Then Mati stood up and looked around, "Where did you find the hex bag? I am guessing that's one of the items you were using to track down the killer."

For normal officers, hex bag would have looked like ordinary bag, so none of them would actually take that as evidence. For Neal, however, was trying to use tracking spell. It meant he had found something that could lead him to the owner of that hex bag.

Mati also remembered there were several people had told police officers that it was the work of witch. So, definitely, these people were in his list to ask question. Some of them might be real witch or not; and from there he and Neal should be able to narrow it down to who did it.

It was either the witch who killed Victoria, knew her well or had an idea of how to plant the hex well.

Neal looked amused at Mati's suggestion.

"Oh, she was a witch, for sure. The occult artifacts they found here are the genuine article. I've never heard of her though. She was a nobody, a borrower. Not like the natural witches of the Coven."

It seemed the witches of the Grand Coven didn't think much of those who weren't born naturally with magic in their veins.

"Anyway, the hex bag was right here," he said, tapping the sofa cushion beside him. "Tucked neatly away. The hex hit while she was here crocheting."

Mati eyes were narrowed, "Yet, you are here to deal with the issue..." Then Mati looked around, "So do you still have that bag?" he asked.

"I might able to make use of it, if it still has its presence of spell." Mati never was big fan of using his power of clairsentience, sometimes it showed too many ugly side of the item's history.

Not so sure hex bag that had been used would show him that could solve the case, but he had to give a try.

If this doesn't work, then they really had to get that list of people who showed their interest in what happened here...

The culprit must have known if she or he did not clean up her/his presence the coven would track her/him down to bring the punishment.

Neal smiled at Mati's observation.

"She was nobody, but that's kind of the point," he said, crossing his legs. "Amateurs are the biggest risk of leaking the secrets of our kind to the world."

Neal removed the hex bag from Mati and tossed it over to him, eyes narrowed in interest.

"What exactly do you think you can do with it?" he asked.

Mati grasped the hex bag, it still had the presence of magic that Neal had mentioned. It was not going to reveal much, but it should at least give Mati the idea if it was place upon by forced entry or the owner of hex bag was invited to the house of Victoria.

At least that would cut down the list of the people he should look for; if it all goes well, he even might have a chance to get the glimpse of who had used this hex bag.

"Trying to make this job easier."

Then he concentrated at the item; grasping the magic within the item that was about to be disappear. "Show me." He whispered to the item as if he was trying to talk to it.

(OOC: It's your decision what Mati could see or not see; I don't mind Mati not being able to see anything as well, and just do it in hard way.)

As Mati attempted to penetrate the secrets of the hex bag, he only got vague whispers and feelings from it. Perhaps if it had been more fresh, he could have obtained more. As it was, he was able to sense conflicted emotions and the impression that it had been placed there with invitation, rather than forced entry.

When Mati's senses returned, it was to see that Neal was watching him intently. His position seemed to have shifted, as though he'd gotten up and returned in the time Mati had not been paying attention.

"You get anything?" he asked. "I was doing some probing. Found some details on Victoria. She wasn't a lone witch. Worked with a small coven in this area. It would follow that one of them might try to hex her. That line up?"

Mati gave Neal a short nod, "Yeah, what you just said made a sense of what I just saw." Said Mati, putting away the hex beg. "Victoria invited a witch and that witch hexed her. So it must be someone from the coven you just spoke of.."

Mati looked at Neal's side, "So were you able to find out where to look for them?" He asked, hoping Neal did find something that could lead to the coven.
