Ava Givens sat on the hood of her daddy's old Ford outside the motel in Rocksville, Maryland, waiting for her partner to arrive. She'd considered waiting inside, but it was too nice a day to waste.

Still, it seemed a tragedy to think that what had been a normal family would never get to experience a pleasant, breezy spring day like this again. All because... well, she still hadn't really puzzled together what could have caused this incident.

"Shoot," she declared, setting the newspaper aside. "What makes a girl go and do a thing like that?"

Whatever it was, it meant bad news. She'd have to be prepared, and she hoped this partner of hers would be up to snuff.

Ahh, Maryland. It's been a while since she came down here. ... Good times, good times.

As the car drove into the motel parking... well from the car alone, it was obvious the person driving it thought themselves a special snowflake.  Compared to the aging pickup Ava was sitting in... well, there was no comparison. The car was something you'd see in a James Bond movie, (god, are those really still going on?) Classy, Elegant, and almost 100% quicksilver in color. It made the blonde hair stand out all the more.

However, contradictorily, it was going at a slow pace. The driver seemed to be rather mild, as she actually took the time to back out again and re-park to get more closely aligned with the fading paint. The engine faded, and a woman stepped out. Sunglasses on and long golden hair pushed to the sides, she wore a light blue sundress and a dull gray undershirt that removed any sense of sensuality the dress might give off.

This woman looked around for a moment before sighting Ava, then waved friendly and practically skipped over.
"Ah, hello~! Are you here for the job?"

Ava blinked in surprise at the person who had emerged from the swanky car. She had expected an arrogant young man, not this sprightly young lady.

"Well, ain't you a ray of sunshine," Ava said, raising her eyebrows. "Ava. Ava Givens."

She shook the woman's hand, smiling, before gesturing to the newspaper.

"Guess you read the details of the job already. Let's get your stuff in the room and plan out our first move."

Ava helpfully led the way to the woman's car and grabbed her bags, then headed into the motel. Having already procured the key, they went directly to the elevator and up to the third floor, where they found their room at the end of the hall.

"Well, it ain't the Ritz Carlton, but it'll do," Ava said pleasantly, setting the bags down and admiring the room. It was one of the better ones she'd stayed in, in any case. By the looks of the other woman's car, however, she wasn't sure how comfortable a stay this would be.

Well, Ava certainly had it right her first guess. Aurora was all smiles as she shook the woman's hand... with both of her own. "Ahaha, you're right. My name is Aurora Light." She was fully aware of how her name sounded and she didn't care. Well, Light was an alias. But it wasn't like aliases were particularly scorned in this industry. Her real name... tended to raise a few eyebrows whenever it was mentioned.

Aurora was, however, a little concerned about how helpful Ava was being. S-She could grab her own bags! Frowning slightly, Aurora conscientiously grabbed whatever Ava had not: namely a pastry wrapper and an empty can of ginger ale. As she followed the rather... excitingly dressed woman, Aurora threw away her 'baggage' face full of melancholy. Hands and heart empty, she followed into the motel room.

Well, okay. That was kinda an overstatement. ... or a blatant lie. Aurora was still all smiles, thanking Ava when they entered the room. "Oh, it's great. Thank you, Ava Givens. This place is much too generous. One fellow actually insisted we work from inside his van. Oh, not that it didn't work out perfectly well, mind you."

With that, Aurora sat down on her bed. "So, the first conclusion is that this was done by possession, either by a spirit or demon. Seeing as to how she had no memory, it could very well be demonic possession. I'd suggest keeping holy water on hand at all times. I myself know how to exorcise, so it should be doable. The second possibility is that the survivor is, in fact, not who she was before. That 'she' did not lose her memory, and instead is taking the place of the girl who had managed to report the murders.

Finally... Well, there's always the weird ones. The girl could have simply been bewitched by a creature, and to be alone with it... Well. Much too unpleasant to speak of. I'm sure you get my gist."
... Well, it was clear that Aurora was, at least, not an airhead. She knew what she was doing, or at least thought she knew.

"Aurora," Ava said, looking surprised. "Well, that's an unusual name. Pretty too."

If Aurora didn't like the room, she gave no indication as such. Either she was used to it, or too gracious to make note of it.

When they got into the job at hand, Aurora rattled off more potential theories than Ava had considered, and she found herself staring.

"Well, you know your stuff," she whistled. "I dunno about demons though. Ain't they locked up in Hell now? I guess if you summon them though..."

Had the victim's daughter been involved in witchcraft? It was possible.

"Well, we'll get a better idea once we hear what the police and the daughter have to say," Ava said, shrugging. "You wanna tackle this together, or split up?"

Both roles would involve "gettin' official," which was the one part of the job Ava never enjoyed much. Suits and heels didn't suit her; give her a pair of jeans and good ol' boots any day.

Aurora nodded. "Demons are just as desperate as anything else. Seal them up, and they'll work their fingers bloody just to get an eye-hole." Aurora considered for a moment their decisions. Ava... she had no idea how experience or strong this woman actually was. And they still didn't know what they were facing.

"I'd like to stick together for now. Splitting up may work faster, but I'd rather get the job done right. A stone left unturned, and things could get ugly. That fine with you? If it, I think we should go to the police first to gather more information on what exactly happened. ... Should probably examine the corpses as well, to see if there's any marks."

Well, it wasn't like she would be particularly upset. Every hunter had their own way of doings things, and Ava would be no different. An estranged partner was worse than an unturned stone.

Ava didn't seem at all bothered by this arrangement. If anything, she seemed rather pleased. She had a good deal of experience with hunting monsters, particularly werewolves, but ghosts she was a bit sketchy on. And demons...

"All right, two is better than one, they say," Ava replied warmly. Then she reached for her bag, and her expression grew darker.

"Just give me a minute to 'spruce up,'" she sighed, heading into the bathroom. When she returned several minutes later, she wore a dark suit and had smoothed her ponytail out so that it rested flatter and more sleekly against her back. She cleaned up rather nicely, though she didn't seem very happy about it.

"Let's head out then," Ava declared, reaching for her keys before thinking better of it. "Maybe you'd better drive. Expect your vehicle would look a bit more official."

[OOC: You can go ahead and get us to the police station in your post.]

Smooth.

Aurora too, had gotten ready. It was a simple change of clothes; the rest of her was already presentable. As for the car... Well, Aurora wondered how Ava got through before... Ahem. Not to be rude or anything. "Okey Dokey~!"

...

You would definitely double-think messing with an FBI agent when they had that sweet a smile.

In any case, they soon arrived at the local police station. Aurora, perhaps a little to kindly, told the clerk they were here on business and needed to see the chief. "Ah, I'm a federally employed psychologist, Leah McKinnon. This is my partner for the more... ehm... legal matters." In turn, they ended up sitting around for ten minutes before being called in to the chief's office but... Well, that was how things went.

Oh boy. To Ava's alarm, Aurora seemed as sweet as ever no matter what persona she took on. That would probably come in handy when talking to the suspect, but for now she would have to take control of the situation.

"The chief will see you now," the secretary said at last, pointing them down the hallway. Ava gave a small sigh and nodded curtly, leading the way to the chief's office.

"Welcome, ladies," the chief said politely, a mustached and middle-aged sort of man. "I'm Chief Reynolds. What can I do for you?"

"You can tell me if y'all generally keep federal agents waiting," Ava said, fixing the man with a cold stare. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, shuffling some papers so as to keep his hands preoccupied.

"Yes, sorry about that. We've just been a little overtaxed lately, and-"

"Then no doubt it'll be a relief that we've come to help y'all out," Ava cut in, nodding to her partner. "Fillmore case?"

Reynolds sighed and nodded, as though he wasn't too surprised by this. Fishing out the case file, he handed it over to the woman and gestured.

"No doubt you already know most of the details," he told them. "Girl killed both her parents in cold blood. Reports from the neighbors said that they heard shouts of an argument earlier in the day. Then that night, both the parents were dead. I admit, there's some unusual aspects to it, but it seems pretty clear-cut."

Ava wasn't so sure. She gave Aurora the file, then looked back at Reynolds.

"Can we see the body?" she said, obviously not asking despite the phrasing. "We'll want to talk to the suspect as well, of course."

Reynolds nodded and looked between the two.

"Suspect or body first?" he asked, standing up.

"Body."

Aurora breezed through the file, clearly use to the layout of it. She then stood and followed Ava and the chief. They followed him to the morgue, Aurora driving of course. Once they met up outside the building, 'Leah' flashed Chief Reynolds one of her most brilliant smiles, eyes closing softly together in something that was both like and unlike a squint. "Ah, Chief Reynolds, I'd like to ask if there were any details not put into the case file. Even if they seemed impossible, or crazy. Rather, those are the most important ones. You need something unique to the person to break them, and once you have it you can get a confession out in the time it takes to finish a cup of tea." ...Scary.

Aurora would listen to any details the Chief had, or didn't have, until they reached the part of the morgue where the bodies were being held.

Reynolds blinked in surprise at Aurora's words, then shifted uncomfortably from one foot to the other.

"Ah, yes, well..." he said uncertainly, "The manner of the killing was somewhat... unusual."

"In what way?" Ava asked, shifting her weight forward aggressively.

"Uh, well," Reynolds said, trying to present whatever he had to say in the most reasonable manner. "It seems that, based on the analysis of the wounds, they were inflicted in a... chopping sort of motion."

He made an indication with his hand that might have been comical under different circumstances.

"I don't really know what she would have used to cause that. A sword? An axe? You don't generally have stuff like that in the suburbs. Not that we could find one anyway."

Ava glanced at Aurora. An unusual weapon that could not be found. Perhaps a cursed object?

They reached the morgue, where they were shown in by the examiner. He lifted back the fabric draped over the bodies, revealing a rather gory mess.

"Both were attacked with a sharp instrument," the examiner said, indicating the bodies, "numerous times. Suggests a violent and passionate cause for aggression. Would fit with the idea that the daughter was angry-"

"Sir, we're not asking for psychological analysis," Ava interrupted. "Just the facts."

The examiner looked a bit taken aback, then nodded.

"Uh, yes. Well, is there anything else you would like to know?"

Ava had moved closer, inspecting the bodies. She'd been around some pretty nasty dead bodies, but those had been animals. She'd never seen a human body in this state before. It was quite revolting.

"How many times would you say they were attacked?" she asked quietly.

"As near as we can tell," the examiner said, looking a bit revolted as well. "A few dozen times. Around forty maybe."

Well, that would explain how they were barely recognizable. Shaking her head, Ava stepped away from the bodies, clearing her head to think.

"And you think that girl had enough strength to do this kind of damage?" she asked. The examiner looked taken aback, his eyes traveling once more to the bodies.

"Perhaps..." he said uncertainly. Ava gave a searching look, then turned to Aurora, giving her the floor for any more questions.

'Leah' stood a few steps back from the others, though it seemed not in disgust. "Well you make it abundantly clear that you haven't actually found the murder weapon..." She just sighed like a disappointment mother. As if the brutally mangled bodies before her weren't the worst thing she's seen. What type of 'psychologist' was she? Ahaha. "One more thing. It's just regulation, but it'd be best to ask since the whole town could be dead in a week. Has there been an increase of strange activity from those in town, any unbranded or strange goods found, or any crop failures in the area? Fields or gardens or otherwise. I have a friend in the CDC, and I've heard some pretty nasty stuff..."

That distance she held from the corpses took on a brand new meaning with the mention of the possibility of a disease or biological agent. Of course, the reasons behind those questions had nothing to do with any diseases. It was just one way to ask unrelated questions that would otherwise be thought of as weird or suspicious. And with the fear of a possible outbreak at hand, those present would be eager to share any information they had.

At the sound of Aurora's question, both Reynolds and the examiner flinched and stepped back from the bodies, looking wary.

"No, not that we've heard," Reynolds said slowly, though he looked a bit concerned. "Ahh... should we be looking into any vaccinations or something? Off the record, of course..."

Ava smiled and patted him roughly on the shoulder before turning away.

"Ain't a thing to worry about, chief," she said nonchalantly, though he didn't seem particularly comforted by this.

"I guess you'll be wanting to see the suspect?" he asked after a moment, recovering. Ava nodded firmly, and Reynolds led the way once more, leaving the grim sight of the mutilated bodies behind.

--------------------

Reynolds escorted the two women to the jail and into a meeting room, where the prisoner was seated and waiting for them. Reynolds stayed back a ways, clearly unsettled by the implication that the girl could be a walking incubator for some kind of plague.

"We'd like to speak with the suspect alone," Ava said, leaving no room for argument. Reynolds seemed unlikely to put one up anyway, and he quickly left the room. Glancing first at the girl, who looked pale and worn, Ava turned to Aurora and nodded for her to take the lead. Her gentle tone might be more effective at disarming the girl.

Aurora simply interlocked her hands in front of her and softly gazed at the girl. "So. What really happened? Whether you want to believe you're insane, or want to believe the world is insane... what did or didn't happen. We need to know." That soft gaze wasn't one of someone who understood. It was of someone who wanted to save.

Jennifer Fillmore stared listlessly at the table before her, her reflection in the polished wooden surface gazing back with hollow eyes.

"I don't know," she said at last. "I was in my room. I was angry, cause my parents wouldn't let me go to a party that night. Then..."

Ava leaned closer in anticipation.

"I was standing in the living room, and they..."

She groaned in anguish, burying her face in her hands.

"They were dead," she moaned, shaking her head. Ava's eyes flickered toward Aurora, unsure of what to make of this.

"Did you notice anything strange? Flickering lights, unusual smells?"

Jennifer looked up blankly, trying to remember.

"I don't know. There might have been a brown out," she said, shrugging uncertainly. Well, there seemed to be signs of spirit presence and possession, but it was hard to be sure. If it was demons, there had to be a reason for them being here, and an invitation. As for a ghost... well, that would be much harder to pin down. But whatever information Jennifer might be able to give them for that day, they might be able to find a link.

Aurora simply nodded reassuringly. "So you didn't have a weapon?" Waiting for confirmation (or denial,) Aurora then proceeded. "... And what about the rest of the day? Before. Did anything seem particularly out of place? Did your parents buy anything new, return from overseas? Pick up something you didn't like? Any other details would be helpful as well." A gentle smile.

Jennifer looked shocked by the question and shook her head violently

"No, of course not," she whispered. "I don't... Our house doesn't have anything like that."

Talking about the memories of the time before the deaths, times she would never be able to recover seemed to both mellow and distress her. Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes, but she was able to speak more easily.

"It was a fairly normal Saturday. We went to the Smithsonian to see the new display. I told them about Jeremy's party that night, and they wouldn't let me go. I got pissed and wouldn't talk to them the rest of the day, then went to my room and locked myself in..."

She trailed off, unable to continue. There was no need, however. They knew what came next.

"Thank you for your time," Ava said, standing up. "For what it's worth, Ms. Fillmore, we're going to do what we can to help you."

Jennifer seemed incapable of responding. She simply stared at them, then nodded slowly.

Once they were outside, Ava sighed and considered the facts. It wasn't much of lead, but it was all they had.

"So, up for a little trip to the museum?" she asked Aurora, smiling.

Ava went over Aurora's list, which seemed to cover everything, and then shrugged.

"Anything out of the ordinary, I 'spose," she said, getting into the car.

--------------------

Having shed her "official" clothes, Ava now looked every bit a tourist as she stood in front of the Smithsonian Institute of Natural History in her cut-off jean shorts and favorite red jacket.

Acted like one too.

"My word, I've never been to a museum before," she said breathlessly as they entered the main foyer. "They all this big?"

To her surprise, it didn't cost them a cent to get in either.

"How do you like that, free too!" she said happily, grinning at Aurora. She knew they had clues to dig up, but that didn't mean they couldn't enjoy themselves a bit.

"Oh, I want to see the dinosaurs first," she said, pulling on Aurora's arm. "Can you imagine hunting one of those things. Now that would be wild!"

'My word?' Aurora raised an eye to that. Ava didn't exactly seem like the British type. Aurora just got dragged along by the enthusiasm... literally, more than figuratively. "Yes... well, I'm sure most of the dinosaurs would be hunting you." She could only grin. Ava was excited like a kid... except no real kid would be excited at the prospect of going to a museum. Ah well. "So... dinosaurs are supposed to be related and have feathers and stuff. ... But people still think of them as the scaly ones from Jurassic Park. The magic of one move... I wonder if historians hate such things." Oh Aurora, who cares about that stuff. DINOSAURS!

It didn't take the two girls long to reach the area with the dinosaurs, and when they did, they simply stood still and gawked around at the enormous skeletons and replicas.

"How 'bout that," Ava said in an awed voice, staring at the T-Rex. "That thing musta gone down hard."

Looking for more appropriate targets, she spied a large pterodactyl suspended from the ceiling and took a hunter's stance, crouching behind as she aimed an imaginary gun up at it.

"Whew, imagine shootin' one of those bad boys outta the air. Uh-"

She paused, casting a shrewd look at the replica raptor on the diorama next to her.

"Thought you could sneak up while I was distracted? Well, there!"

She mimed smacking its face with the butt of an imaginary rifle, then pointed it at where the thing's face and mimed blowing it off.

"Two for the price 'a one!" she declared cheerfully.

By now, more than a few people were watching them, looking quite surprised by this display.

"Ah, ma'ams," said one of the security men nearby, stepping up to them, "Is there anything I can help you with?"

Ava looked around and smiled at the man, who was rather striking in his dark suit.

"You sure can," she said, giving him a flirtatious smile. "Would you mind telling us about some new displays going up?"

The man smiled apologetically, looking from one to the other.

"That would be the Institute of American History. This is the Institute of Natural History."

"Whoops," Ava said, looking a bit flustered. "Well, thank you kindly for your help!"

Motioning to Aurora, the two moved off quickly for the other museum.

"Guess that does make more sense," Ava said as they approached the other building. "Not much chance of finding a haunted dino bone or something."

Aurora just smiled at Ava. "At least you had fun though, right? If you can't enjoy the job or the small time you get off, then you'll end up miserable. If it's American History... Then Native Americans? ... I've never faced anything like that before, I hope I don't have to. With all their spiritual beliefs, it doesn't even seem like you'd be able to KILL whatever is the cause. And if the land itself is haunted..." She just shook her head. "Well, let's hope for the best."

Ava seemed pleased by Aurora's thoughts on the matter, and she beamed at the other girl in turn.

"That's the spirit," she said cheerfully as they entered the other museum.

As it turned out, the American History museum had far more than just Native American displays. All of the country's history seemed contained within these halls, and Ava was astounded by all she'd never seen or even heard of before.

"Hey, look," she said, pointing at a sign for a new exhibit.

"American Folklore: The Dark Side," Ava read, peering inside. "Well then..."

She led the way inside, peering around at the displays, wondering if something in here could have triggered it.

Something caught her eye, and she stopped at one particular showpiece, where an axe was prominently displayed.

"Little Lizzie took an axe," said a voice from behind her, and she jumped to see a young boy - probably ten or so - grinning up at her.

"Huh?"

"Gave her mother forty whacks," the boy continued. "When she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one."

Ava stared at the boy, who gazed back at her with pleasure at her disconcerted expression.

"Henry!" a woman snarled, coming up and taking his hand. "I am so sorry he bothered you."

Ava forced a smile as the boy glowered up at his mother.

"Oh, it's fine," she said, brushing it aside. But when the mother had turned around and started walking away, she glared at the boy and gave him a very rude hand gesture in return.

"Well, that was somethin'," Ava said, turning back to look at the display. "Lizzie Bordon, huh? Says... well, basically what that little turdmunch said."

She glanced at Aurora, wondering what the other girl's thoughts were on the matter.

Aurora's smile turned grim. "Forty Whacks? I don't remember much about that but... It does match up with the bodies..." She shook her head at Ava. "But why now, of all times? Is it really a ghost? It could be the Axe that's cursed too. ... We'll research for the rest of the day, then if nothing comes up we'll head over to her grave. Sound good? "

... She paused for a moment.

"Ah, after we see if there are any other... possible causes." A bright smile for Ava told her that was bull**** reasoning. They would be looking around for fun, of course.
