I planned it all out from a psychological perspective.
the bash to the head gives the woman an empathetic excuse to worry over him when he comes around. so, if they fail to extract the idea in the second level, John will have created a situation in which he can talk more intimately with the Mark. a bash to the head can also explain obscure or frightening dreams, which gives John a way to explain away any lingering memories of the second level if things go horribly wrong.

Well, I am not so sure if that was necessary.... and people tend to sleep longer when they are relaxed...

And you do not want to use violent method to make the people knocked out since you do not know what kind of effect it will have on his dreaming state

for instance, level one in the movie was raining because the person wanted go to bathroom

In this case, the 'pain' in his head might become obstacle for the mark... making him unable to convey his idea fully

One of the great example having 'pain' through out the dream was the 'Mr.Saito'

generally, a bump on the head isn't a major wound if you don't addle something inside.

Well the point here is, the 'pain' might interrupts his presentation

And the possibility of him forgetting what he was about to say

Even if it is not 'major pain', it would catch up to the mark.

I think the worst thatwwould happen is that he might carry down a headache lol.

Well it was a force to knock him unconscious, we all know if you want to make a person unconscious by banging his head it's not going to be 'weak' force...

and you would know about knocking people unconscious, right?
