The tavern they'd agreed upon was dimly lit, and the cloud of smoke from cigarettes and cigars did little to help the visibility. But he preferred it that way; less likely to be seen or noticed.

He had to admit, he had some misgivings about this whole thing. It had been a major risk, a big step to take. But he was sick of it - all of it. His ideas were always second best. He was hardly ever recognized or noticed.

But this was it. This was his big break. If he pulled this off, he'd be living the sweet life. It would require stepping on some people to get there, but he didn't care. It was about time he did the stepping.

Seated in a back booth and nervously puffing out a cloud of smoke from his own cigarette, Richard Price checked his watch again. The client should be here any minute. Time to put his game face on.

A hand rested gently on the man's shoulder before Travis slid into the chair next to him and saluted someone at the next table over with his half-filled glass. "Relax a bit gov'nah." He said cheerfully. "If'n you look like you're sweatin bullets, it'll attract unwanted attention, and neither of us wants that."

Travis took another sip of his drink, letting his eyes roam over the other faces in the room before he turned to his potential employer. "So, I suppose you know what you're signing up for by contacting someone like me. Let's hear about it. What do ya need done. We'll discuss price after I know what I'm dealin with."

Richard took a moment to study the man in whose hands he was potentially placing his entire career before reaching out a tentative hand.

"Rich Price," he said, pumping the man's hand a bit shakily before retreating to pull the cigarette from between his lips. After a few furtive glances, he leaned forward toward his new acquaintance and spoke in a low voice.

"I work for a company called Ace Advertisement. No doubt you've heard of it."

He paused for a moment, as though waiting for some kind of reaction.

"Anyway, I've got a big potential break coming up. A project to come up with the a game-changing ad for a Fortune 100 company. Unfortunately, I haven't had too much luck with coming up with one, and the other coworker on the project, Ned Deil, is rumored to have already cooked one up. And word is, it's a winner."

Rich leaned back, grinding his lips in frustration on the cigarette a few moments before glancing back at his potential hire.

"I need you to get that idea so I can use it instead. Ned won't know what hit 'em. Think you can do it?"

"Trevor Bash. A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Price." Trevor responded, giving the man's hand a firm shake.

He leaned back in his chair, taking another sip of his drink while Rich laid out his background. Corporate espionage and the like. Of course, Trevor had already known who the potential client was before arranging to meet with him. Knowing who you were dealing with had always been a big deal to Trevor. It was one of the reasons he'd always been as successful as he had.

"So, lemme make sure I've got it all down here. The job is ta get into this bloke, Ned Deil's mind and get hold a his idea for this ad? Sounds realistic enough. What's the time frame?"

Rich gave a curt nod at Trevor's assessment and gave another furtive look about.

"The ideas for the ad are due by the end of the month," he explained. That gives us a little over two weeks for you to get the idea and for me to work it up."

Just the idea made his blood pressure feel like it was coming to a boil. Taking another long drag, he released the smoke in a shaky stream before putting out the butt.

"I don't have a whole lot now," he said, licking his lips. Money was always the tricky part in these deals.

"But I do have a pretty hefty promotion bonus if I get this break," Rich added quickly.

Trevor downed the remaining contents of his glass and sat it on the table before pushing himself to his feet. "A rush job then. I can have you the idea in ten days."

He slid a napkin across the table to Rich. Upon closer inspection, there was an account number written on it. "Unfortunately, rush jobs are costly. Fifty grand buys you your competitor's idea. Thirty up-front, and the other twenty after the job's done. This is non-negotiable. Sorry mate, but that's job security." He quipped cheerily. "The job starts as soon as you make the first deposit. If'n I've not seen anythin moved into the account in the next four days... Well, since it'll take ten for my team to do our part, I don't see much point in taking your money after that."

Trevor grinned and turned to disappear into the haze of the bar. "G'day gov'nah."

Rich watched Trevor depart, grimacing as he down the last of his glass.

"Mercenaries," he growled, feeling an itch for another cigarette. Well, no time for that now. It was time to get going. He had money to scrounge up, after all.

The next afternoon...

"Three nines." Trevor said, laying his cards down on the table. The older gentleman across from him chuckled, having already folded several cards ago, and the other two men at the table grimaced and pushed their chips towards Trevor. There was a beep from his pocket, and Trevor fished out his mobile to see a deposit had been made to his account. With a grin, he shoved it back in his pocket and stood up, collecting his chips in the process. "If you chap's will excuse me, I've got some urgent business to attend to." The other men around the table didn't ask what it was that pulled him out of their poker game so early. They knew better than that, as did Trevor if one of them did the same.

After exiting the casino, he hit a few numbers on his mobile and held it up to his ear, listening to it ring once, twice. Halfway through the third ring, someone picked up. "Lattimer." The response was only enough to signify that the person on the other end was listening.

"We're on."

"The usual place?"

"Always."

Trevor hung up and motioned for the valet to bring him his car before pushing an email from his phone to the architect he'd contacted earlier that afternoon to setup a potential job. The only contents of the email was an address. The architect had already been informed that preparations would begin as soon as all members could arrive.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An hour later...

John Lattimer stood over the billiards table in the center of the spacious loft Trevor called home. The cue snapped forward in his fingers, sending the balls scattering as Trevor stepped inside. "Right on time." John said, tossing a cue to the other man.

Trevor caught it without looking and gave it a deft spin in his fingers as he walked towards the table. "How much do you have on the mark already?"

"Some." John responded cheekily as Trevor sank one of the balls into the side pocket. "Some of my sources aren't as efficient as I am though. It'll take them a few hours to get me the information I need."

"That's fine." Trevor said, sinking another of the balls in the corner. "It'll take our architect a little while to get here."

"Who'd you get this time?" John asked as one of the balls missed the mark and drifted back a few inches.

"Someone local. The time frame didn't allow us to pull in one of our usuals." Trevor responded, rubbing chalk on the end of his cue while John took his shot.

"Let's hope he knows his stuff..." John said, punctuating his sentence by sinking two balls with one shot.

The silver coin slipped easily between his fingers, as though they'd memorized its surface. The archangel Michael peered up at him as Hunter slipped the coin back into his pocket, nodding to himself.

"Yep, still awake," he thought, nodding. He hadn't been so invested in the dream world that it was difficult to tell, or that he'd stopped dreaming, but it never hurt to keep up the habit.

Pulling his messenger bag higher up his shoulder, Hunter set his glasses straight and strode into the warehouse, trying to look confident. A series of odd clacking noises met his ears, but he couldn't pinpoint their identity.

Then, he walked into view and saw two men over a pool table, looking every bit the part of illegal mercenaries that he wasn't.

"Yo," he said, holding up a hand and offering a smile. "Uh, Hunter. Hunter May. You know, the Architect? We spoke yesterday."

Hunter took the opportunity to look around the warehouse, already envisioning the setup he would need. There was a few moments before he realized he'd been daydreaming and turned back to look at the men.

"So, this job," he said, taking a few tentative steps toward some empty tables in the corner and setting the bag with his laptop down. "Are we going to discuss it, or should I start setting up?"

The two men standing by the billiards table glanced at Hunter for a moment when he introduced himself. Then, they glanced at each other. John shook his head, and Trevor offered him a cheeky grin when he shrugged in response.

"Trevor Bash." He held out his hand for Hunter to shake. "I'm the one who contacted you about the job. This," He waved towards John, who was lining up another shot on the table. "Unfortunately, is my known associate, Mr. John Lattimer."

"Pleasure." John quipped, slicing the cue into the ball and sinking the eight ball into the corner pocket.

Trevor smiled at Hunter and offered him a shrug as well. "I think John's already got the stuff together for us. So, if you wanna pull up a seat, he'll spill it on us."

"No need to sit down on my part." John responded, moving to the bar, where his laptop was sitting. "Drink?" He asked Hunter, holding up a bottle of scotch. Without waiting for a response, he poured some of the contents into a glass on the bar and tipped it back, draining about half.

Sitting the glass back on the bar, John turned the laptop to show the other two men a picture of the mark. "Ned Deil, age 29, occupation graphic artist. The guy is like a grab bag full of good, if not great, ideas. He's well thought of among upper management of Ace Advertisement. Most of his peers have a healthy respect for his talent as well. Only some of the lower tier employees seem to have a problem with him. Apparently, he's too easygoing for some of the older crowd, comes across as too much of a free spirit for them to stomach. He's also stepped on a few other artists to get to his position so quickly, and more than just our client would love to see his ankles cut out from under him on this job."

"Mr. Deil only has one parking violation during his time working for Ace, and that's the only spot on his record in the past five years. His college record, on the other hand, is a bit more interesting. Seven drunken disorderlies, two counts of public indecent exposure, and one assault charge, although the record pretty much states that the bimbo started it."

"In any case, it seems our mark was a very active frat boy, Phi Beta Art Fraternity, and he had some trouble holding his liquor. Nothing else in his profile suggests any sort of criminal activities. The only crimes he's committed were those he was too hammered at the time to remember."

"No recent changes in spending habits or unexpected large purchases. So, there's nothing to suggest the mark thinks his idea is any more impressive than anyone else's. He's your run of the mill corporate employee with a pinch more talent than the rest he was thrown into the bin with."

"Questions?"

John reached for his glass again while he waited for either of the others to respond.

"Any obvious weaknesses?" Trevor asked.

"Alcohol and women." John responded, tipping back the remainder of his scotch.

"Anything to suggest a problem with the extraction?" Trevor again.

"Well, he is an artist, so the stuff in his subconscious is bound to be a bit more obscure than most others, but aside from that, no."

Well, it was clear enough that he was the outsider in this trio. Careful to keep his sigh from spilling out, Hunter nodded as John poured out a glass of scotch for him. It was a good thing the other two men were so absorbed in talking about the Mark, or the grimace he made at the taste would, no doubt, have put him under a most embarrassing spotlight. Nodding enthusiastically to the discussion, he discreetly tipped the glass back and dumped the rest down the sink before setting the glass down and tuning back into the discussion.

It seemed that the Mark was one of those people born lucky - charismatic, brilliant, and handsome. Hunter didn't hold it against him though. If anything, it seemed a bit unfair to trod into this man's life and potentially ruin it because of someone else's jealously.

But this was the job, right? These ugly realities came along with it. Much as he loved the pure creation of dream-share, he knew that these complications seemed to come hand-in-hand.

"So, this may be off-base," Hunter said, glancing at the other two men. "But can't we just set up a board-room level and have him give the presentation? If he believes it's real, his mind should populate the dream with projections of who he would expect to be there. Then, he'd basically just hand the idea off to us."

Perhaps it was laughably simplistic, but he would kick himself for not trying the easiest approach if possible.

The grimace might have been missed by Trevor, but John saw it instantly, and when Hunter poured the rest of the scotch down the sink, John winced. He practically reached out and snagged the glass from the other man's hand when Hunter went to put it on the bar.

"You're on the right track there gov." Trevor said, ignoring the woeful look on John's face as he looked from the empty glass to Hunter and back again. "Simplicity is often the key to success, but you can't be goin in without a backup plan."

Trevor turned to John, a knowing grin on his face. "How's your come to bed routine?"

John rolled his eyes as he poured himself another glass of scotch. "Better than most." He left unspoken that it wasn't perfect, but Trevor had learned to read in between the lines with John.

"Right then. Here's what I propose chaps. We'll setup a two layer job. First layer will be John's dream." Trevor said, turning to Hunter. "Can you set us up a frat party? Something with lots of noise and alcohol."

He waited for Hunter's response and then turned to John. "John will use his best 'come to bed' on the mark, and once we've drawn him into a private room, we'll drop him into level two." He continued, turning back to Hunter. "Which'll be your board room. Assuming all goes as planned, we'll get the information we need from him there, but if things fall through, we can let John sweet talk the idea out of him in the first layer."

John grimaced and turned away from the other two, tipping back the entire contents of his fresh glass of scotch. "Do try to retrieve the information the easy way." He grumbled. "I'd hate to think you intentionally put me in a compromising situation just for kicks."

Trevor flashed a grin and winked at Hunter. "You sayin you're not up to the job gov?" He asked over his shoulder. "We could always find a real lady to do it."

"I didn't say that." John grumbled, pouring himself another glass of scotch and hastily downing it.

So much for subtlety. Well, he was going to have to make up for the negative charisma points now.

"Frat party and business meeting. Sure, I can do that," Hunter said, nodding confidently.

Right, cause he had so much experience with frat life. Sure, he'd seen it and heard of it in tv, movies, and other media. But dreams were all about the feel of it. An interpretation from the perspective of others would never be a substitute for the real thing, and if the Mark had considerable experience with it, he'd surely pick up on it.

Hands-on research then... God, Hunter hoped desperately that he wasn't in over his head on this one.

"Right then." Trevor said, with a confident nod. "Both of you have full use of this facility for any planning or additional research you need to get done. There's some reclining chairs in the home theatre down the hall, and a PASIV machine hooked up to them. We'll do our trial runs there once you two blokes are ready."

"Sounds like a plan." John said, tipping back one more glass of scotch before turning towards the others. "Hunter, you got somewhere to be tonight? I know a place that you might want to check out."

"I'll leave you two blokes to it then." Trevor quipped, pulling a card out of his jacket pocket and holding it out to Hunter. "My number's on there if you need to get in touch."

"Now, if you chaps'll excuse me, I've got some other business associates to meet with this evening. We'll meet back here around noon to discuss where we are." He gave John and Hunter each a nod before picking up a briefcase off the bar and heading for the door.

"Hunter, you got some place to be tonight?"

Deer in the headlights syndrome, check.

Say yes. Say yes.

Doing work here late would be perfectly reasonable. Or perhaps viewing some architectural possibilities?

This guy was trouble. Whatever he had planned couldn't possibly be good.

Say YES.

"Uh, no. I'm free."

DAMMIT.

"Relax." John took his time, sounding out the word as he threw an arm over Hunter's shoulders and lead him towards the door. "I'm doing you a favor here."

As they exited the loft, John released the other man and made his way across the parking lot to a forest green aston martin. The headlights flashed once when he punched the unlock button on the remote, and John motioned for Hunter to get in as he slipped into the driver's seat.

"Unnaturally high pitch in your voice when you told Trevor no problem indicates you were uncomfortable with your answer." John said after Hunter closed the door.

"Seat belt." He pointed at it, as if giving directions to a child. Considering the level of shock Hunter seemed to be in, it was altogether possible that his mental capacity might resemble that of one right now.

"I have little trouble putting you in a board room." John continued speaking as he threw the car into reverse and backed out of the parking space. "So, that leads me to assume you have an issue with creating the frat party environment." He held up a finger to stop Hunter's response before it could even be formed. "Don't try to lie to me. It takes over a decade of practice to pull that off, and even then, it's hit or miss."

"Now, I like jobs done cleanly. So, I'm willing to sacrifice my evening to make sure you get things right. After all, if we screw up, we don't get paid, and it just so happens I have an invitation that I was planning to turn down. They'll be pleasantly surprised when I show up I think. So, they won't mind me bringing along a friend."

John needn't have tried to stop him from speaking. Hunter had lost his voice somewhere back in the warehouse, even as his hands numbly buckled the seat belt like they belonged to someone else.

"You're too kind," Hunter muttered when his voice had finally caught up, a tinge of sarcasm in his words. Hmm, the shock was apparently lowering his guard.

He glanced at his clothes, then over at John's. Well, his jeans, boots, and checkered short-sleeve button-down shirt weren't exactly party attire, but he had no illusions about asking John to stop at the hotel to change.

"So, who's throwing this party?" Hunter asked, fishing for a topic of conversation.

"Anything to help another guy out." John replied, seemingly oblivious to Hunter's sarcasm, as he steered out onto the highway. His own attire was slightly more businesslike than Hunter's. A charcoal jacket covered his pale pink button down shirt, and a pair of matching charcoal slacks ran down to John's shiny black shoes.

"It's a little shebang being thrown at the local university. There's a criminal justice fraternity there that invites me to their parties sometimes. I've done guest lectures for some of the classes they sponsor before. So, they stay in touch." He flashed Hunter a wide grin as he turned down an exit ramp and into the part of town where the university was located. "Law enforcement fraternities throw the wildest parties."

A strict follower of the "bro code," it seemed. Hunter wasn't sure if he should appreciate that or not. Well, whatever his methods, his intention seemed benign enough. He should at least try to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"Criminal justice?" Hunter said, arching a brow. "Who'd have guessed."

In a way, it was almost fitting. Who better to know how the law was broken than a law breaker? This John must be good though to be operating in such plain visibility, given the nature of his work.

"This the place?" Hunter prompted, perhaps unnecessarily, as the car slowed to a stop even as he spoke. The loud noises and lights were already starting an uncomfortable squirm in his stomach, and they hadn't even gotten out of the car yet.

"Yeah, this is the place." John said as he shifted the car into park and cut the engine. Without saying anything, John twisted in his seat, reaching for something behind him. A moment later, he came up with a glass bottle, which he popped the cap off of and handed to Hunter. "That, my friend, is a bottle of the best Italian pellegrino. The water in that bottle is so smooth that you'll feel like you're drinking a baby's ass."

John popped open the glove compartment and took out some rubbing alcohol, which he poured onto a cotton swab and circled the outside of the bottle's neck with. "And this, is how you drink at a frat party and stay sober. To anyone that takes a sniff or decided to grab a quick sip, the alcohol on the rim will fool them into thinking it's vodka." He gave Hunter a pat on the shoulder as he stuffed the rubbing alcohol back in the glove compartment and got out of the car.

"Make it last for long enough to get a good feel for the party, and for goodness sake, don't accept any drinks from the women." John called over his shoulder as he made his way across the lawn. "This is an academic university, and they dig nerdy guys. God knows what kind of date rape drugs they pour into the glasses they hand guys that look like you."

Anything else John might have said was cut off by the sound of a guy by the door. "Johnny Boy!!!" Obviously already intoxicated, the man stumbled forward a few steps to enfold John in a hug.

"Steven?" John asked. "It's only nine man, you good for another few hours?"

"I'm all good bro!" Steven said, letting John go and backing up a shaky step.

"What's the catch tonight?"

"Mexico night, Johnny Boy! Grab some tequila! We'll do some shots!"

John grinned and gave the man a playful shove towards the door. "I might just do that."

He stepped past Steven and into the large building they had been outside to be greeted by the smell of alcohol, the sound of Latin dance music, and a university student he knew by the name 'Rambo' dancing on the coffee table in nothing but a pair of boots and a sombrero. Yup, this was definitely a frat party...

Hunter decided not to voice the obvious question of "Why would I want to drink a baby's ass," and instead focused on John's methodical preparation of the bottles neck with rubbing alcohol.

"Clever," he murmured, accepting the bottle with a sigh. Well, at least he wouldn't have to worry about getting wasted. He probably could have done without the backhanded compliment though.

Hunter followed in John's wake, steeling himself for what was inside. When the human wall in front of him moved to talk with some of his friends, Hunter immediately felt his jaw become in danger of dropping off.

Man. On coffee table. Only boots and sombrero. Stuff was moving around that shouldn't be.

Yeah, he couldn't do this.

He felt an almost irresistible urge to turn around and bolt, but he felt John's eyes on him for an instant.

No, he had to do this. He was a professional, dammit. And if it meant wading neck-deep into a river of discomfort, he was just going to have to deal.

Hunter's eyes darted around the room, where a bunch of students were holding up their drinks and loudly hooting. Taking a few bold strides, Hunter entered the room and held up his own bottle with a loud - well, as loud as he could muster on his first try - hoot of his own, earning some cheers and raised glasses in response.

Okay, this wasn't so hard. Just act like a complete ass and you blended right in. Taking a sip from his bottle and trying to ignore the stench of the rubbing alcohol, Hunter slowly began to make his way from room to room, pulling his mind into analytical mode.

Three hours later...

"Hey there pal!" John said, putting an arm around Hunter's shoulders and leaning on him a little for stability. "How goes the research?" The goofy grin on John's face was all anyone would need to know he was moderately intoxicated, but if that wasn't enough, he'd also managed to acquire a sombrero of his own somewhere, which hung low over his eyes.

"You find what you were looking for?" John asked, bringing an almost empty bottle of tequila to his lips and taking a long sip. "If not, there's some lovely seƱoritas in the second room down the hall that are offering massages. I've been told they have magical fingers, but between the dancing and the shots, I've not made it that far into the building yet."

It was hard not to sigh in disgust as John swung an arm over Hunter's shoulders. His breath reeked of alcohol, and the sombrero slanted over his face was beyond absurd. It was tempting to simply shrug him off and watch him crash to the floor, but Hunter let the moment pass.

"Yeah, I got plenty," he admitted, polishing off the end of his Pellegrino bottle.

Walking through the house had certainly given him a first-hand feel for the whole thing. The dense, thick air from the activity and all the bodies packed into the house. The stench of sweat and alcohol and cheap fragrances (and vomit by the upstairs bathroom) nearly forming a vapor throughout the building. The pulsating music and cacophony of cheers, screams, and drunken conversations.

Yeah, he wouldn't easily forget this.

"Oh, we've been acquainted," Hunter said, recalling the escapade where two heavily intoxicated women had tried massaging the shirt right off of him before one had tripped drunkenly on the stairs up, allowing him to slip his way out.

"I'd skip it if I were you," he sighed, lamenting the loss of a few of his buttons. "So, this mean you're ready to go?"

It was safe to say John couldn't walk a straight line, much less drive a car. That landed him squarely as the designated driver.

Super.

John raised an eyebrow at Hunter's comment about being acquainted with the girls down the hall, making him look even more ridiculous than he already did in a suit and sombrero. "Not a fan of the seƱorias then?" John asked, taking another sip of the tequila.

"Are you gay?" It was asked completely cold turkey and with an expression way too serious to belong on an intoxicated man's face.

The question only hung in the air for a half second before John's face split back into the goofy grin though. "Don't bother to answer that. I already know what you'll say from the look on your face."

He tipped back the bottle of tequila again and then sat it on the side table next to the doorway. "Normally, I'd stay until the sun rises and the party's over." John said, reaching up to pluck the sombrero from his head and drop it on top of a lamp. "But we've gotta work tomorrow. So, I'd better quit while I'm behind." He leaned a little harder on Hunter, turning the grin back in his direction. "How would you feel about dumping me back at the loft, buddy?"
